The LA Clippers unveiled a new team logo and uniforms this morning. They are moving to the Intuit Dome next season, finally leaving the shadow of the Lakers. The Intuit Dome is a two billion dollar privately funded arena by owner Steve Ballmer. Ballmer wanted the Clippers to have their own identity since Los Angeles has famously been dubbed Laker town. Ballmer hopes this new arena and rebrand can make LA a Laker-Clipper town.
Los Angeles Clippers First Rebrand
When Ballmer bought the team in 2015, they also had a rebrand, but it was a very small and insignificant change. But these new logos and uniforms are a true full rebrand. Ballmer and the Clippers conducted a focus group study to help with the new changes. Originally, he wanted to change the name of the franchise. “ The Focus groups are advisory, not definitive,” Ballmer said. “But I still listen to them, and I have heard, partially to my surprise, that there is no interest in a name change.”
Focus Group Recommendations
After receiving the feedback from the focus groups, the Clippers made the change. They went with a navy blue ship with compass points around it for the logo. It also has the full name of the team per league rules. A nice touch they added is that the N in Los Angeles is at the north point of the compass. There is a new emphasis on the Navy, which is not a normal part of the Clipper’s color scheme. For Jersey, there are red, white, and navy variations. They will have the new logo on the shorts with variations of the Clippers on the jersey. A lot of fans are wondering about the powder blue color scheme. This was not an option when the new jerseys were revealed, but there are hints that it could come later.
After years of the Clippers being in the Laker’s shadow, they have finally taken a huge step to make a name for themselves. Let’s hope this new rebrand and arena leads to success for Steve Ballmer and the Los Angeles Clippers.
